| The GRAND HOTEL NATIONAL lies on the right hand shore of Lake Lucerne, close to the centre of the city of Lucerne, offering wonderful views across the bay towards the world-famous Mt. Pilatus; a privileged location which has played a significant role in the celebrated history of this exclusive hotel. Opened in 1870 and built in the style of a French Renaissance chateau, the hotel created a revolutionary stir through being larger and more magnificent than any other previously built. Over the years, the GRAND HOTEL NATIONAL has become an important setting for history in the making. The hotel's architect, Colonel Maximilian-Alphons Pfyffer, a well-connected Swiss Officer, Cäsar Ritz, the then Hotel Director whose name was later to become known world-wide, Auguste Escoffier, once a chef at the hotel and a name still on the tip of every gourmet's tongue have all contributed towards placing the hotel in the history books of Lucerne. | ||||||||||||
