Kompong Chhnang eludes a lot of tourists, though many pass through it without ever knowing it. Located at the base of the Tonle Sap Lake in the center of Cambodia, every Phnom Penh to Siem Reap speedboat cuts through the heart of this province.
Clockwise from the north, Kompong Chhnang is bordered by Kompong Thom, Kompong Cham, Kandal, Kompong Speu, and Pursat.
Kompong Chhnang is easily reached by bus or share taxi. Not all speedboats stop here. It's about ninety kilometers from Phnom Penh on an excellent road so it can be easily seen in a day-trip, perhaps even combined with a trip to Udong.
There's not much to see in this small province. The town of Kompong Chhnang is a bustling riverfront community and a few old temples are scattered about. |
