Department of Water Services of the public works (DWS) which runs the water services for the country has taken appropriate steps to address the possible risks, which may arise due to the Y2K Problem. The two major Y2K project; the upgrades of DWS SCADA (telemetry) System was completed in May 1999, and the computerised Water Billing has now been fully completed.
DWS has further assured that the major equipment such as pumps/motors and controlling equipment have been verified by the manufacturers to contain no date dependent components and therefore will not be affected by Y2K Problem. The operation of these equipment is either manual or can be operated on a manual mode.
DWS have since enhanced their Y2K Contingency Plan to better cater for possible Y2K residual risks. The standby generator available at the main treatment works at Bukit Barun has been tested and can maintain plant operation at reduced capacity in the event of temporary lost of main power to the works. The contingency plan also include plan of action to deal with emergency water supply needs. Among others this includes topping up reservoirs and redirecting water supply from alternative reservoirs as well as setting up water distribution points at strategic locations (near the reservoirs) and water distribution using tankers.
To demonstrate their Y2K readiness DWS has successfully conducted Y2K roll over test for the telemetry and billing systems on the 16 th December 1999. The test was preceded by presentation on the current status of DWS Y2K readiness including their enhanced contingency plan. The test was done in the presence the BPMMY2K Chairman, members of the BPMMY2K Secretariat and Bank Association of Brunei. The test was also given appropriate media coverage.
These latest updates reaffirm the GREEN Y2K readiness status of DWS as previously reported.
